Robotics Recap: Saildrone Wins Coast Guard and Sweden Deals, Blue Ops Opens Robot-Boat Orders, Formic Raises $50M and Agility Moves Digit 5 to NVIDIA Thor

Zip Robotic Robotics Recap Oct 25 2026: Saildrone, Blue Ops, Formic, Agility

By Zip Robotic · October 25, 2026

Four stories from October 21–24, one theme: don’t buy the robot, buy the work. A government buys ocean surveillance as a data service instead of owning the boats. A drone maker opens orders for robot boats that are ready now. A factory-robot company raises money to rent robots by the month. And a humanoid maker lines up the computer and safety stack it needs before customers can deploy at scale.

1. Saildrone wins ocean-watch work from the U.S. Coast Guard and Sweden

On October 22, Saildrone said the U.S. Coast Guard awarded it an $8.5 million extension to keep running uncrewed surface vehicles for maritime domain awareness over New England fishing grounds through spring 2027. Saildrone says that from June to August its fleet sailed more than 19,000 nautical miles on the mission and logged thousands of vessel-contact detections. The Voyager is a 10-meter (33-foot) wind- and solar-powered vessel that watches the sea with radar, AIS and cameras.

The same day, Sweden’s defence procurement agency FMV announced a framework agreement for four Saildrone Voyagers as surveillance-as-a-service for one year: Sweden buys the data, not the vessels. FMV says the effort runs under the Nordic defence cooperation Nordefco, contributes to NATO’s Task Force X Baltic, and can be expanded.

Why it matters: Navies and coast guards don’t have to buy, crew and maintain a robot fleet to get persistent eyes on the water. They can pay for the coverage. For anyone heading to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this week, that is the business model to watch in marine autonomy.

2. Red Cat’s Blue Ops opens orders for the B-18 and B-39 robot boats

On October 22, Blue Ops, the maritime division of drone maker Red Cat Holdings, introduced its B-Series of uncrewed surface vessels and said two new models are available for orders. The B-18 is an 18-foot boat for tactical reconnaissance and one-way attack missions, designed to deploy from Littoral Combat Ships; Blue Ops says it has completed sea trials and is available ahead of schedule. The B-39 is a 39-foot vessel built on an established commercial platform and already in low-rate production. The B-Series also includes the B-26 (formerly Variant 7), which Blue Ops says is in full-rate production. Blue Ops launched in 2025 and has expanded manufacturing in Valdosta, Georgia.

Why it matters: Militaries want robot boats they can field now, not prototypes. Blue Ops is pitching a range of sizes that are already built or in production.

3. Formic raises $50 million to rent robots to American factories

On October 22, Chicago-based Formic announced a $50 million Series B led by Mercato Partners, with Light Ray Ventures, Lightscape Partners, Citi and others, plus debt financing from S2G Investments. Formic installs and runs robots in factories for one monthly fee that covers the hardware, service and software. The company says its robots have logged more than 750,000 production hours in more than 100 facilities across 30+ states, with 99.6% uptime and a 97% renewal rate, and that it now deploys about three times faster than a year ago. Formic says it is working with Physical Intelligence on general-purpose robot models; Mercato’s Ryan Sanders joins the board.

Why it matters: Most small and mid-size U.S. factories can’t justify a big up-front robot purchase. Renting the work by the month removes that barrier, and the next step Formic describes is general-purpose robots on the same model.

4. Agility moves Digit 5 to NVIDIA IGX Thor

On October 22, Agility Robotics said Digit 5 will standardize on NVIDIA IGX Thor, with NVIDIA as the exclusive onboard compute for the generally available version. NVIDIA Halos is being integrated into Digit’s safe human-detection system, and Agility is joining the Halos AI Systems Inspection Lab. Agility says early access to Digit 5 starts in the first half of 2027, with wider availability over the following six to nine months.

Why it matters: Humanoids can’t work next to people at scale until their safety can be certified. Locking in one compute and safety platform is groundwork for that.

The pattern

Ocean data sold as a service, robot boats sold off the shelf, factory robots rented by the month and a humanoid built around certifiable safety: robots are increasingly sold by the job. Which move matters most? Tell us on X @ZipRobotic.
